The first visual impression of the property.
When entering the hotel the first thing you usually see is the reception, the place where all your questions will be answered and your memorable stay at the hotel will begin. As a photographer I know the first impression is not made when the receptionist starts talking to the arriving guest. It begins the second the guest arrives at the Hotel and breathes in the design and welcoming atmosphere of the property, especially nowadays that many hotels have online check-in. The reception area has a great impact on the guest, and we want that impact to be as positive as possible. When I photograph the reception areas I look for the best angels, featuring what the guest’s eyes will see when arriving at the hotel. I want the reception to look very accessible as it is, and capture the unique design mark of the hotel. Hotels with more photos of their rooms and amenities experience higher numbers of booking online according to different studies. Obviously the rooms are important, for the guest to know what type of room and rate to choose. But let’s do not forget about the importance of the public areas that add up to the overall atmosphere and experience of the hotel. For the guest to know what to look for when arriving and when to look for it the hotel must have high-quality photos capturing the essence of the reception area in the hotel.
So, here are my 5 guidelines to capturing the best frame of the reception:
- Choosing the right angles, inviting you to enter the hotel.
- Capturing the essence of the design mark and making the reception look accessible.
- Arrange the photoshoot during comfortable hours, usually not during check out and check in time for the area to not be overly crowded.
- Organizing the furniture so it looks inviting but not overcrowded.
- Considering the property’s surroundings and the lobby design, look for unique moments during the day. For example if the hotel is located near the sea and the lobby is facing west, I will shoot some photos also during the sunset.

Hotel 75 Tel Aviv
The Urban Reception – Dynamic and young. Everyone who passes by on the street takes a look and is immediately drawn in to the young and special cafe inside. The scooter that symbolizes Tel Aviv, the photograph of the Bauhaus buildings and the hanging laundry maintain the atmosphere of the street even inside the reception itself.
NYX Hotel Munich
The Modern Reception – The reception is made of mirrored surfaces, including the flower pot in the reception center. The bubbles behind the reception are a work of art that changes colors all the time. NYX hotels are designed for young business people and you will also find many works of art in them.
Schumacher Hotel Boutique Haifa
The Significant Reception – On the wall behind the reception there is an engraved map of the city, with the golden dot (to the left of the gum jar) marking the location of the hotel. The lighting of the wall highlights the very fine texture of the outline of the map. The monochromatic colors were broken with young and colorful accessories and with jars. The gums that match them are colorful.
